DARK PASSAGES: Tristan & Karen
Vol. Four in The Brethren Series (novella)

"An amazing read! With a hero like this one, the bite -- and what comes with it -- is worth the blood." - NY Times & USA Today best-selling author Sharon Sala

Tristan Morin is a vampire on a mission: to not fall in love with Karen Pierce. To do so would prove that humans and Brethren were meant to be physically and emotionally bound to each other -- something he, as a full-blooded Brethren, refuses to believe. It would be so much easier if Karen wasn't beautiful. And if there wasn't something about her that draws him like a moth to a flame, damn near impossible to resist.

Karen has always felt an inexplicable attraction to Tristan. More than just the fact he's strikingly handsome, it's as if being with him is something natural, comfortable and right. But soon a brash choice on his part leaves her heartbroken and confused, and a sadistic new enemy will put their newfound love -- and their lives -- to the ultimate test.

About The Brethren Series

If you're unfamiliar with the world of the Brethren, or the series storylines to date, don't worry. Everything you need to know to jump right in can be found on this web page: the backstory, the cast and even a sneak peek at some characters you'll be meeting very soon!

The Brethren are an ancient sect of vampires who have lived in secret within human societies for milennia. Their origins date to medieval France, and they migrated to America just prior to the outbreaks of both the French and American Revolutions. Over the centuries, they have amassed a sizable fortune in the bourbon distilling and Thoroughbred horseracing industries and live on enormous estates tucked among the rolling Bluegrass hills of Kentucky.

Patriarchal in leadership, Brethren clans are dominated by whichever family has the most male heirs. For more than three hundred years, that distinction has belonged to the Noble clan, led by Augustus Noble. But when Augustus's young grandson Brandon decides to defy the ritual of the bloodletting, the traditional first human kill among his kind, and flee the secluded Brethren farms, the empire a power-hungry and driven Augustus has worked so hard to build suddenly teeters on the brink of destruction.
Brandon has always felt like an outsider among the Brethren. Stricken deaf and mute as a child in the aftermath of a brutal assault, he's endured years of torment and abuse at the whim and will of his kin. When a desperate escape attempt reintroduces him to Angelina Jones, a human woman who was his first love, he only becomes more determined to break free from his birthright and forge his own path in life.

He's aided along the way by his twin sister, Tessa, and Rene Morin, Lina's one-time police partner, through whom they discover the Morins, a separate, heretofore hidden family of Brethren who have made their homes in eastern California, near the shores of Lake Tahoe. The Morins are considered outcasts, believed to be dead by the Kentucky-based Brethren, because of their conviction that Brethren were meant to feed from each other, not humans. By doing so, the Morins have been able to develop and hone telekinetic and telepathic skills beyond anything their counterparts in Kentucky have managed.

Although at first determined to deliver Brandon back to the farms and punish him for his defiance, Augustus soon comes to realize how much he has sacrificed for his power. It's no longer worth the cost, he decides, and he reconciles with his grandson and his long-lost love, Eleanor. Without him, the hierarchy of Brethren leadership is left in shambles, and a long-time rival clan, the Davenants, use the chance to pursue not only dominance, but vengeance as well. The Davenants have a centuries-old score to settle, not only with Augustus and his family, but with the Morins, as well, and it's one they mean to see answered -- in blood.

 Brethren FAQs
  • The Brethren can be exposed without harm to sunlight. They don't sleep in coffins. They can eat garlic and see their reflections in a mirror. They have fangs, which are retractable, and descend from recessed grooves in their upper jaw whenever they are ready to feed.
  • The Brethren are supernaturally strong, have a natural telepathic ability to sense each other's presence, and can read each other's thoughts, as well as manipulate thouse of humans in their immediate vicinity.
  •  The Brethren are long-lived and can heal rapidly, but are neither "undead" nor immortal. The average lifespan for a Brethren is 400 years.
  • Humans who are bitten by Brethren are food. They cannot and do not become vampires as a result.
  • Although they can heal from most any illness or wound, Brethren cannot survive a catastrophic injury, such as a bullet to the head.

Cast of Characters

Brandon Noble - Rendered deaf and mute as a child in the aftermath of an assault, he defies his Brethren heritage by refusing the traditional rite of the first human kill. He's skilled in martial arts and is learning to control fledgling telekinetic and telepathic abilities. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Angelina "Lina" Jones - a street-smart former police officer, Lina thinks she's seen it all until she falls in love with Brandon Noble. Her former partner on the force, Rene Morin, turns out to be a Brethren, too. But when Rene betrays Brandon, her hard-earned trust in him is irrevocably shattered. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Tessa Noble-Davenant - Brandon's twin sister, who is four months pregnant. She follows him when he flees the Brethren horse farms, leaving behind her abusive husband. While helping Brandon, she falls in love with Rene Morin. Realiztion of her brother's betrayal isn't enough to dissuade her from this love, even though she nearly weds Rene's younger half-brother, Tristan, out of wounded spite. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Rene Morin - When a gunshot wound ends his police career and leaves him with an artificial leg, Rene's life spirals into despair. It's not until he meets Tessa that he again finds reason to live. He relucatantly sells out her twin brother, Brandon, in a bargain to keep her safe. While he's made his peace with Tessa and Brandon for this betrayal, it's left an indelible scar between him and his one-time best friend and former police partner, Lina Jones. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Tristan Morin - This young physician is desperate to prove his grandfather wrong about his Brethren nature, even if that means forskaing Karen Pierce, the human he feels destined to love. But not even a failed elopement with one of his own kind, Tessa Noble-Davenant, can distract his heart or mind from Karen for long. First introduced in Dark Passion.

Karen Pierce - A registered nurse, she's one of a select few humans who are aware of the existence and true nature of the Brethren vampires. But her closeness to the Morins, and to Tristan in particular, may place her in grave danger when an old enemy of the clan returns, eager for revenge. First introduced in Dark Passion.

Augustus Noble - Brandon and Tessa's grandfather, he is the former clan patriarch who once ruled the Brethren with an iron fist. The deaths of his grandchildren, Caine and Emily, along with that of his son, Sebastian, force him to realize that not even wealth and power can take the place of family. He relinquishes dominance to reconcile with Brandon and reunite with his beloved wife Eleanor. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Eleanor Noble - Augustus's wife, Brandon and Tessa's grandmother, she is dying from a rare and incurable autoimmune disease unique to the Brethren. To try and save her life, years earlier, Augustus sent her to live with his dearest friend, Michel Morin in California. First introduced in Dark Hunger.

Michel Morin - Patriarch of the Morin clan, he's made his family fortune in both the pharmaceutical research industry and crude oil market. Banished from the Brethren because of his radical ideas about Brethren nature and behavior, today Michel and his clan are believed dead by their fellow Brethren, except Augustus, who helped them to escape the murderous wrath of their enemies centuries earlier. First introduced in Dark Hunger.

Naima Morin - Born to an enslaved human mother, today she is one of the most formidable Brethren telepaths. Beautiful, brave and unabashedly bold, Naima struggles to contain darker elements of her nature that, if unleashed, could push her to the brink of madness and beyond. First introduced in Dark Passion.

Mason Morin - Michel's son and a prominent Hollywood plastic surgeon, he remembers all too well the dark days of the Morin family's past. Like a surrogate father to Tristan, he's made his own fortune outside of his family's with a successful real estate development business. First introduced in Dark Passages: Tristan & Karen.

Jackson Jones - A human; Lina's older brother and Brandon's former tutor. Deaf as the result of a childhood illness, he has left his full-time teaching position with a prestigious all-deaf academy to help care for his ailing mother, who is recovering from cancer treatments at her Florida home. First introduced in Dark Thirst.

Allistair Davenant - Augustus's long-time rival for control of the Brethren, his hatred for the Nobles and Morins goes back more than 200 years. His last attempt to seize power results not only in his own gruesome death, but in the further splintering of the Brethren empire. First introduced in Dark Hunger.

Martin Davenant - Allistair's first-born son, who shares his father's ruthless contempt for the Nobles and the Morins. The father of Tessa's unborn child, he helped Rene barter a deal with the Brethren Elders to trade Brandon for Tessa's freedom. First introduced in Dark Hunger.

Jean Luc Davenant - One of seven Davenant sons; Allistair's brother. When he learns of his brother's humiliating defeat and death, he renews a centuries-old blood oath to restore his family's honor and to see his kindmen's deaths answered in kind. When Augustus and Brandon leave Kentucky to return to the Morin compound in California, he follows. First introduced in Dark Interludes.

Valien and Pilar Ramirez Cadana - Brother and sister with whom Brandon discovers he -- and all of the Brethren -- share more in common than he could have ever imagined. First introduced in Dark Passages 2: Pilar & Elias.
